Film night

1 May @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Australia China Friendship Society (www.acfs.org.au) will screen the 2015 documentary “The Dalfram Dispute 1938” at 7.30pm on Wednesday 1 May 2024 in Catchpole’s Room at the Southern Cross Club Jamison. Donation $2 at the door. Visitors are most welcome.

In November 1938 dockworkers at Port Kembla refused to load pig iron destined for Japan on the Dalfram, believing it would be used to make bombs and bullets against China. A long and acrimonious industrial dispute followed, during which Robert Menzies gained the moniker ‘Pig Iron Bob’. The documentary includes interviews with survivors of the Nanjing Massacre, in which hundreds of thousands of Chinese were killed.

Penny Lockwood will host a Q & A after the screening (the doco is based largely on her father’s book).
